The thermoplastic coating Abcite
The thermoplastic coating Abcite and its advantages
Several years after the application of Abcite coating, we again passed by the Noordbrug in Kortrijk. In 2009, we performed a special coating treatment on this cable-stayed bridge. We applied a single thick thermoplastic Abcite layer, with an impressive thickness of 400 Āµm, as an alternative to the prescribed 4-layer wet paint system.
This coating has held up over the years without any problem in the most challenging environments, exposed to all kinds of weather conditions, intense UV radiation, harmful exhaust fumes, aggressive road salts, and so on. Remarkably, the welds are as solid as they were immediately after coating.
A special feature is that Abcite is applied directly to the blasted, hot metal without the need for any underlying galvanization or metallization. After 14 years, there is no trace of under rust from any mounting damage, despite the fact that the fasteners did corrode. This proves that a single layer of Abcite is sufficient and has successfully passed the rigorous C5 test. We are extremely proud of our team and the results we have achieved.
